Matilda

Laurie MitchellFrom the Director’s Chair

Even if you’re little you can do a lot[!]” Twenty-nine years of musical theatre at Catholic Central is a pretty impressive run and I am so lucky to have been a part of it. When I arrived at CCH in the 2007/08 school year, I was intimidated and impressed by the program, the theatre, the history and camaraderie that existed - I was worried I would disappoint.  Coming from smaller, rural schools, I was not used to all the fancy, high-tech ways of the Eggplant and now it is even fancier and more high-tech ;-) “If you sit around and let them get on top, you [You] Won’t change a thing.”   I’ve learned a lot, helped build musical theatre into a class and now that we have made it to 2020, I am proud of the dozen mainstage shows I have directed as well as the culture of The Eggplant Family I have aimed to foster. I am also proud of all of “my kids - my students - once you’re my student you are always my student and once a show-kid, always a show-kid ” who have been a shaping influence on me and our program - you make it all worthwhile.  There has been much hard work, long hours, passion, fun, sacrifice and cooperation put in to keep “The Standard of Excellence” reputation intact.

As I reflect on my last CCH musical, I am amazed that year after year the students who come to audition seem to be gifts from God with talent and the right fit for the show we are producing. Every year it seems to work out just right and for that I am blessed - we are blessed. I hope for all of the student “miracles” who have come through the program while I have been here, including my own two girls, that your Eggplant family has been a place that is so much more than a stage but a home where you have shone, learned, been cared for and experienced the wonder of theatre. Thanks to my family, the students, production teams, the parents, the teachers, the staff, the musicians, technicians, audiences and everyone who has been a part of my time here at Catholic Central Musical Theatre. On with the show!

 Love; Mamma Mitchell

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly lovable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however; the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!
