The hallways of Catholic Central High School (CCHS) are buzzing with a familiar sense of pride this week as four standout student-athletes officially solidified their futures. For the Class of 2026, the dream of competing at the next level has become a reality, with two gridiron giants and two mat specialists set to take their talents to the collegiate stage for the 2026/2027 season.
The Trenches and the Gridiron: Football’s Next Chapter
For Noah Gruninger and Zachary Patching, the road to university football was paved with sweat and a physical presence that simply couldn't be ignored. Football Coach Joey Cavilla noted that while their sheer size caught the eyes of scouts early on, it was their divergent leadership styles that truly anchored the team.
- Noah Gruninger (University of Alberta): Heading north to join the Golden Bears, Noah is the
personification of the "silent warrior." Coach Cavilla describes him as a "head down, work hard" athlete who never utters a complaint. Noah’s philosophy is simple yet profound: “Always remember why you loved the sport to begin with. Keep working hard because you love the game.”
- Zachary Patching (University of Montana-Northern): Crossing the border to play for the Lights, Zachary brings a vocal, nurturing brand of leadership. Known for taking younger players under his wing, Patching’s ability to mentor others while maintaining his own elite performance has made him an invaluable asset to the CCHS program.
Masters of the Mat: Wrestling’s Dynamic Duo
Closer to home, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns have secured two of the most decorated wrestlers in CCHS history. Coach Dale Hansen spoke with high praise for Kayden Mellafont and Kieran Bouchard, highlighting them as the "foundational pillars" of the wrestling room.
“Kayden has been a foundational leader—setting the standard for work ethic and accountability,” said Coach Hansen. “His leadership has shaped younger athletes and strengthened our team culture in ways that will last long after he graduates.”
Regarding Kieran, Hansen emphasized the maturity that has come to define his tenure:
“Kieran has grown into a steady, reliable, and deeply respected presence. His signing with the Pronghorns is a testament to the character and maturity that elevate everyone around him.”
The Common Thread: More Than Just Talent
While the sports and destinations differ, the four boys share a remarkably similar perspective on what it took to reach this milestone. When reflecting on their success, the group pointed toward a specific "formula" for the Class of 2026: Determination, the support of family, and a relentless work ethic.
Above all, they agreed that the greatest payoff wasn't the scholarship or the jersey—it was the process of falling in love with the sport all over again, every single day. As they prepare to trade their high school colors for University blue, gold, and green, they leave behind a blueprint for the next generation of Cougars to follow.
Congratulations to Noah, Zachary, Kayden, and Kieran!
