Not only are they the early morning risers, they are also the after-school supporters, bringing lessons to life, guiding with compassion, and sparking curiosity and wonder in the minds of our students on a daily basis.

But behind the scenes, there is also an extraordinary team of superstars whose tireless efforts help make Holy Spirit vibrant and alive. Alongside our teachers, this hardworking crew makes each day truly special at every one of our schools.

From the education assistants, library technicians, office administrators, and many more, our support staff keeps our day-to-day life running smoothly. Be it lending a hand in the classroom, helping students and staff stay organized, or just offering a kind word and a smile, these heroes are the heartbeat of our schools.

An example are our Holy Spirit counsellors and wellness team members who are always nearby with an open door and an open heart. Not only do they help our students navigate their ever-changing emotions, they create a safe, caring and inclusive environment for students and foster a culture of care and connection.

Our custodial and facilities staff are the stewards and caretakers of our buildings. Whether they are advocating for their school or department or leading student-centred activities, they set the tone for our community, all while juggling a thousand moving pieces on a daily basis.

Behind the division is a group of dedicated individuals working quietly but powerfully to guide our mission and vision: our Board of Trustees. As faith-filled advocates for the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division, and Catholic Education, our trustees help shape policies, make key decisions, and ensure our schools remain strong, inclusive, and focused on student success.

Each role - no matter how visible, many of which have not been named - plays a vital part in contributing to the soul of our school communities. This work matters deeply; it’s what makes Holy Spirit Catholic schools the warm, positive and compassionate places they are.

To each and everyone of our behind the scenes heroes: Thank you for creating spaces where students feel seen, heard, and supported. Thank you for filling our hallways with laughter, love, and learning. Honouring Tradition through Blackfoot Language & Culture Evenings

The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is fostering deeper connections to language, culture, and community through its Blackfoot Language and Culture Evenings. Hosted throughout the 2024/2025 school year by our First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) Team, in collaboration with Changing Horses and Mioohpokoiiksi, these gatherings offer a meaningful learning experience.

“Once a month, we hold these special Blackfoot Language and Culture evenings at schools across Holy Spirit for families to gather, connect, learn from our Blackfoot Elders, and take part in activities,” said Mrs. Shelley Kirkvold, Holy Spirit’s FNMI Coordinator. "It's a rare opportunity that we are blessed to be able to share with our community on a regular basis."

These nights are a vital part of Holy Spirit’s ongoing commitment to truth and reconciliation, creating spaces for cultural connection and learning.

“When we look at these evenings, they are actually reconciliation in action,” said Mr. Kendrick Fox, a Blackfoot Language Instructor with Holy Spirit. “Through colonialism, the Blackfoot language was lost, and it is very important for our families and children to relearn it. Our Elders always say that language is the basis and root of our culture, and we want to bring that connection back.”

The Blackfoot Language and Culture Evenings first began in 2022 at Father Leonard Van Tighem School. Since then, attendance has grown, with more Elders and families taking part. As interest has expanded, so has the reach—this is the first year these evenings are being held at multiple schools across the division. Over time, the impact has become evident, particularly in how they help Blackfoot students feel a stronger sense of belonging in their school communities.

“It was important for us to expand beyond Father Leonard and involve the whole school division to create an even larger family and community,” added Mr. Fox. “We found that the children of the families who attended weren’t as withdrawn at school, and attendance improved. It helped create a sense of identity and place.”

The most recent gathering was held at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, where families enjoyed a night of learning and fun. Elders emphasized the importance of preserving the Blackfoot language and its pronunciation, and attendees played a game of Animal Bingo using Blackfoot names.

Elders Joann Yellow Horn and Rosaline Crowshoe, both fluent Blackfoot speakers and respected knowledge keepers, shared their wisdom. They continue to pass down their language to new generations, including some who are now teaching it themselves.

“It scares me that we’re going to lose our language, so it’s crucial for teachers to teach it properly,” said Elder Crowshoe. “Speakers won’t be around forever, so I want to pass on proper Blackfoot because we really don’t want to lose our language. Once we lose it, we lose a crucial part of who we are.”

“Our language has evolved over the years, and we want to keep it as true and natural as possible,” added Elder Yellow Horn. “My hope is to continue our oral traditions into the future. That was always our way—it was never written. That’s why these evenings are so special. We need to listen to our speakers, and it’s up to each and every one of us to carry it forward.”

Looking ahead, Mrs. Kirkvold has high hopes for the future of Blackfoot language learning in Holy Spirit schools.

“The hope is that Blackfoot is spoken in our schools just as we have additional language learners,” she said. “It’s exciting to see this understanding grow as we continue to provide that sense of belonging.”

A dedicated leader in Catholic education, Aaron has served the division since 2016 as Associate Principal at Catholic Central High School and Director of Religious Education. His journey with Holy Spirit began as a student, making his continued commitment to the division even more meaningful.

Superintendent Chantel Axani commended Aaron’s deep faith and leadership, stating, “Aaron Skretting is a humble yet strong leader who is deeply committed to his faith and dedicated to pastoral guidance within our school community. As a servant leader, he leads with humility, balancing his ability to guide while also walking alongside others in their journeys. His presence is a testament to the power of faith in leadership, creating an environment where spirituality and personal growth flourish.”

Aaron’s contributions to Catholic education are far-reaching. He plays a key role in organizing spiritual retreats, Faith Plans, and Catholic programming, ensuring that faith remains at the heart of all school initiatives. A scripture passage from 1 Kings 19:11-13 deeply resonates with him: “The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’” This verse serves as a reminder for him to maintain an open and attentive heart, a quality that has guided his life and work.

Aaron will be honoured at the ACSTA’s upcoming Blueprints Conference on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Bridging Cultures: Japanese Exchange Students Experience Faith and Learning at Holy Spirit

For the past two weeks, Catholic Central High School was blessed to have eight incredible foreign exchange students from Japan, along with their two amazing chaperones, grace their halls. On Monday, March 24, 2025, they had their final goodbye dinner but not after an experience of a lifetime.

"We were so grateful to welcome back our Japanese exchange students through this incredible program for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic," said Mrs. Wendy Urquhart, the French & International Education Consultant for Holy Spirit. "In spite of the fact that it's been five years since we've had a group of this size visit, this is a testament to the common and universal values that we share as educators across the globe."

The students came from CCH's sister school, St. Ursula Eichi High School in Sendai, Japan. For over two decades, the exchange program between these two schools has been going strong and Catholic Central's Principal, Mrs. Joanna Polec, says it is an incredibly special partnership.

"When I was a beginning teacher, I was tapped by the principal at the time to help with the initiation of a sister school relationship with St. Ursula Eichi High School. That was over 20 years ago," said Mrs. Polec. "I have watched the program grow and the relationship between CCH and St. Ursula grow stronger, even over challenging times like the earthquake of 2011 and the devastating Fukushima nuclear accident that followed, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, that fact that the program still exists and will resume for CCH students to return to Sendai in June 2026 is evidence that it his been a partnership that will be long-lasting."

The students arrived on March 11, 2025. During their exchange, they got a chance to learn from some of Catholic Central's incredible teaching staff, visit some unforgettable landmarks and locations, and took in all that southern Alberta has to offer. The students were joined by their Chaperones, Mrs. Momoko (Momo) Ishii, and Mr. Haruhiko Koseki. In addition to being a chaperone, Momo was also one of the first exchange students to take part in the program over 20 years ago.

"We've really enjoyed this trip while spending time in Canada," said Momo. "It has been fun to meet my host family and spend time with the staff from Catholic Central High School and Holy Spirit. I was also very happy to visit my past host family from when I first came to Canada as a student taking part in the exchange program. This was a great experience and has helped create an even greater bond."

"We spent two weeks here and everyday was exciting and fun," added Mr. Koseki. "We would spend two days here in Lethbridge and at Catholic Central and then two days visiting somewhere. This program is well organized by teachers at CCH and Mrs. Urquhart and it was fun for us and the students to experience many things that we've never seen."

Their time at CCH was spent in the classroom taking part in English as an Additional Language courses with their instructors Mrs. Polec and Mr. Braden Dalton. On their visits outside of the city, they were able to experience local Alberta landmarks like Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Frank Slide, Banff, Lake Louise, and Johnston Canyon. They also went on day trips to some of Lethbridge's local attractions like the Galt Museum and Archives and the Helen Schuler Nature Centre.

The farewell dinner, on Monday, March 24, was a chance for the staff at CCH and Holy Spirit, along with the students host families, to say their final goodbyes to these eight outstanding, young individuals. The evening saw all of our exchange students and chaperones read heartfelt farewell letters and perform a song for everyone in attendance.

"Listening to the students perform and then present their goodbyes to the families is a tradition that we've done throughout the program and it was great to see that continue," said Mrs. Urquhart. "It's always an emotional evening for everyone involved and one that we hold very dear to our hearts."

Mrs. Polec, Mrs. Urquhart and the staff at CCH and Holy Spirit look forward to making the trip to Sendai in June of 2026 for their exchange but are already looking forward to the next time they get to host the incredible students and staff from St. Ursula Eichi High School.

On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, we gathered for our Division-wide Spiritual Development Day—a time to unite, reflect, and grow in our Catholic faith.

"There are only really two days that we formally gather as a school division—Opening Mass and Spiritual Development Day," said Mr. Aaron Skretting, Holy Spirit's Director of Religious Education. "These occasions are significant in our relationship with one another as a faith community and it is important that we have these times together."

Superintendent Ms. Chantel Axani echoed the importance of the day, stating, "Our divisional Spiritual Development Day offers an opportunity for our staff to reflect on their journeys as pilgrims of hope. It has been thoughtfully designed to inspire and uplift everyone, and I sincerely hope that it served as a time of renewal."

This year’s theme, "Proclaim! Pilgrims of Hope," set the tone for a day of faith-filled experiences. The morning began with Mass led by Fr. Troy Nguyen from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, who later concluded the day with an inspiring keynote session, "Seeking Beauty," where he shared insights from his journey walking the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage.

"It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to come and speak," said Fr. Troy. "I love talking to schools and, as both a priest and former teacher, I see the vital role Catholic Education plays in shaping young minds and hearts."

The day also featured two powerful speakers: Dr. Troy Davies, CEO of Catholic Social Services, and Dr. Matt Hoven, Author, Associate Professor, and Kule Chair of Catholic Religious Education at St. Joseph's College, University of Alberta. Dr. Davies explored faith through imagery in ‘A Pilgrimage of Hope in Four Images’, stating, "My discussion revolves around the fact that we’re all on a pilgrimage that leads us back to the Father." Meanwhile, Dr. Hoven, in his talk ‘Capturing the Fleeting Idealism of Our Youth’, shared, “I'll be focusing on sources of hope that we can find within our schools as well as in our faith to be more hopeful people."

In her first year as Superintendent, Ms. Axani expressed her excitement for this special day.

"I was very excited to share in my first Spiritual Development Day," she shared. The musical, featuring iconic ABBA hits, opens on March 14 and runs until March 22 at the Knights of Columbus Eggplant Theatre.

Director Braden Dalton, who has been involved with the school’s Musical Theatre program for three years, emphasized the dedication that has gone into the show.

"Mamma Mia has been quite an enjoyable and exciting show to put on," Dalton said. "We've been working hard with our cast since the end of October and our crew since the start of December to put on all the bells and whistles that you get to see. However, we begin far earlier than that, with staff and production starting discussions at the end of last year to talk about what show we want to put on."

The production, which follows the story of a young woman trying to discover her father’s identity before her wedding, has been a labor of love for everyone involved. Dalton added that early audience previews have been met with great enthusiasm.

"People said this week, in our previews, that they felt like they were filled with joy coming to watch, and that's what our goal is. We want people to leave enjoying their experience, wanting to come back, and hopefully wanting to join future productions."

One of the unique aspects of this year’s production is the staging according to one of the show's producers, Jessica Ens.

"Mamma Mia is brought to you in the round, which means we play to all four sides of the theatre, creating an immersive performance and making the audience feel like they’re part of the show," Ens explained.

The production also features a special fundraising initiative. CCH is hosting three sing-along performances in partnership with the Chinook Child and Youth Advocacy Centre, where audience members are encouraged to sing along. Proceeds from these performances will go directly to the centre.

"We're really excited to partner with Catholic Central High School. It's such a wonderful opportunity to collaborate together and raise money for the centre," said Cheryl Patterson, the centre’s manager. "Partnerships with schools are very special to us because this is where the youth are and this is where we can connect with them."

Tickets for the production are available on the school’s website. Regular show tickets are $20, while sing-along nights are $25, with $5 from each ticket going to the Chinook Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.

For the students, "Mamma Mia!" is more than just a show—it’s an experience. Katie Hartman, who plays Donna Sheridan, expressed her excitement.

"Opening night is probably the biggest thing for all of the cast and crew because it's our first time in front of a real audience. It's fun to finally see strangers' faces instead of our staff and students that we've met before. I'm really excited to do the show, and it's really awesome music that everyone will know."

Beyond the music and performance, Hartman also appreciates the charitable aspect of the show.

"It feels really good to be helping a charity like the Chinook Child and Youth Advocacy Centre through things we enjoy doing. I really appreciate that all of our hard work is going towards helping this amazing organization."

Chaelan Villacin, who plays Tanya Chesham-Leigh, is also eager for audiences to experience the joy of ABBA’s music.

"I'm excited to do the show because everyone knows ABBA music, and I love the music."

Katy Sawa, a Grade 11 student playing Rosie Mulligan, spoke about the sense of camaraderie among the cast and crew.

"There's such a sense of community with everybody, for both the cast and crew. We're always trying to do things together before the show, like team-building exercises, so we have a better presence on stage and as a group."

Dalton hopes the production leaves a lasting impact.

"We are a high school production, but we like to be as professionally well-oiled as we can. We're not the size of the Yates Theatre or a gymnasium, but we like to think that what we do here is pretty important for both our kids and our community," he said. "This show holds a special place in my heart, and I know I’m not the only one. It’s one of the first shows I saw professionally, and it helps when you come in knowing all the songs because ABBA is so iconic."

With ten performances, an immersive set, and a talented cast bringing the magic of "Mamma Mia!" to life, Catholic Central High School’s production is set to be a must-see event. Shining Bright: Catholic Central's Anna Campmans Honoured as 2025 Young Woman of Promise

The Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is truly blessed to have some of the most incredible students and youth in southern Alberta. One shining example is Anna Campmans, a Grade 12 student at Catholic Central High School, who was recently named the 2025 Women of Distinction Awards recipient for the Young Woman of Promise Award.

"I was excited just to be nominated, but as I learned more about what the Young Woman of Promise Award represents, I realized what an incredible honour it is," said Anna. "I feel so blessed to be recognized."

Now in its 49th year, the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards celebrate outstanding women in our community in honour of International Women’s Day. The Young Woman of Promise Award specifically recognizes young women under 30 who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in academics, career, or community development while serving as role models for others.

Anna’s nomination came from Mallory Kristjanson, the Family School Liaison Counsellor at Catholic Central High School—and a past recipient of the same award. From the moment she met Anna three years ago, Mallory knew she embodied everything the award represents.

"From her very first day at Catholic Central in Grade 10, she lit up the hallways—not just with her kindness and compassion, but with her energy and the way she uplifted others," said Mallory. "It takes a young adult of Anna's caliber to be nominated, never mind to receive this award. Beyond her countless hours of service in the Lethbridge community, she has also done amazing work at Catholic Central to ensure we are truly a community."

Anna is deeply committed to volunteering, giving her time to the 4H Club, the Chinook Sexual Assault Centre, and countless school initiatives. She has also served on the Catholic Central High School Student Council since Grade 10 and is currently its President. For Anna, volunteering has been eye-opening and something she sees as both a privilege and an opportunity.

"Volunteering gives you a new perspective—one you wouldn’t have otherwise. It allows you to see how other people live and truly understand every single person in our community," she said. "I feel blessed to have the gifts that allow me to give back, and in turn, gain a deeper understanding of how others see the world."

In true fashion, when asked how winning this award made her feel, Anna humbly turned the spotlight on the women who helped shape her.

"I feel like I’m a mosaic of all the women who have taught me, raised me, and been role models in my life. This award doesn’t just honour me—it honours all of them," she said.

Looking ahead, Anna will be attending Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton next fall to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. She envisions a future in advocacy, where she can continue making a difference and giving back to her community.

Anna will be officially honored at the YWCA Women of Distinction Gala on March 8, 2025.

Congratulations, Anna! Your dedication, compassion, and leadership inspire us all!

2024 Santas Anonymous

2024 CCH Santa's Anonymous gives back to Holy Spirit Community

After months of hard work collecting donations and raising money, Catholic Central High School successfully wrapped up their 2024 Santa’s Anonymous campaign. This past Wednesday, students and staff assembled an impressive 74 Christmas hampers, which were distributed to families across the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division.

"Santa’s Anonymous has been a cherished tradition here at CCH for over twenty years," said Matthew New, Associate Principal at CCH and one of the campaign’s organizers. "The need in the community has grown over the last few years, so we’ve expanded from supporting 56 families last year to 74 families this year, with plans to grow even more next year. The most important thing for us is to never say no—if a school recommends a family, we do everything we can to support them and ensure they receive something for Christmas."

Santa’s Anonymous helps teach CCH and Holy Spirit students about the importance of giving back, not only during the holiday season but throughout the year.

"The main goal is that we have fifty 16-, 17-, and 18-year-old kids here giving back to their community and trying to make an impact," Mr. New said. "The wonderful thing about doing this for so long is knowing that some students in this building have received this care and these packages when they were younger. Seeing it come full circle, with those same students now helping and giving back—even if they don’t realize they once benefited from it—is truly incredible."

Donations and funds for Santa’s Anonymous have been raised since the start of the school year by schools across the division. Fundraising efforts included pumpkin and poinsettia sales, bottle drives, CCH’s welding program fundraiser, and cash donations. For the first time this year, eight elementary schools participated, adding to what has traditionally been a junior high and high school initiative.

"Thanks to the incredible efforts of our Holy Spirit community, about 80 percent of all the food and gifts included in the hampers were donated, with only 20 percent purchased using funds raised," said Mr. New. "It takes many, many people at different levels to make this special campaign a reality, and we’re so thankful to everyone who has shown their support."

<colgroup><col><col><col></colgroup>

CCH 60 Year Anniversary Gala

CCH 60 Year Anniversary Gala a Huge Success

This past weekend, the Friends of Catholic Central High School held their 60th Anniversary Gala, "Celebrating 60 Years Strong: Building Tomorrow, Honoring Yesterday”! This exciting fundraising event was an incredible opportunity to commemorate Catholic Central’s rich history, achievements, and contributions made over the last sixty years to academic excellence, acts of service, athletics , and fine arts. 235 tickets were sold and attendees got a chance to eat, drink, socialize and reminisce on CCH's last 60 years.

"The Friends of Catholic Central's 60th Anniversary Gala was not only a significant milestone for the school but a success in that it brought together the community, which has not been done in some time," said Joanne Polec, Principal of Catholic Central High School. "The Gala served as a celebration of the school's history, achievements, and impact on students and the community over the past six decades. This kind of event not only brings together alumni, students, staff, and community members, but also strengthens the school's reputation, traditions, and legacy. We are grateful for all those that attended and all those who supported our event."

The event included raffle draws, a progressive 50/50 and a silent auction.
