Aboriginal Studies

In Aboriginal Studies our goal is to shift thinking, understanding, and knowledge of First Nation’s, Metis, and Inuit (FNMI) people, the issues and challenges they face, and the contributions they have made to society (Alberta Program of Studies).

In Aboriginal Studies students will learn about (FNMI) history in North America from pre-colonial times to present day. Recognizing that Canada is in the process of trying to reconcile past ill-treatment of indigenous people, we will also strive to balance history with highlights that celebrate FNMI culture through creating and experiencing the arts through dancing and drumming, visiting with elders, and participating in traditional activities such as the Blackfoot prayer and smudging.

We also try to get out into our community and take field trips to places around Lethbridge (and Stand Off). Depending on the season, we might visit the friendship centre, Henderson Lake, the library, and Red Crow College.
